Sara J., Ph.D.
Sara graduated with a B.A. in Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics from Agnes Scott College and earned her Ph.D. from the Cell and Molecular Biology program at Baylor College of Medicine. As a graduate student, she studied the anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties of probiotic biofilms. During her NRSA-funded postdoctoral studies, she purified a novel anti-inflammatory carbohydrate from Bacillus subtilis and demonstrated that this carbohydrate suppressed pathogen-induced colitis. She also determined the host pathways modulated by this probiotic-derived molecule. Her research has focused on determining how commensal organisms establish and maintain immune homeostasis in the gastrointestinal tract. Sara has expertise in microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, and immunology. She has experience writing, editing, and submitting research articles, reviews, and successful NIH grants.
