Mary D., Ph.D., E.L.S. (Certified Editor in the Life Sciences)
Mary received a Bachelor's degree in natural sciences from the University of Cambridge in the UK. This was a broad course covering cellular and molecular biology, genetics, physiology, and pathology, and she chose to specialize in cellular biology, with a special interest in cancer biology. Mary then completed her graduate studies at the Medical Research Council in Cambridge, where her doctoral research focused on the mechanism of action of anticancer drugs that target DNA topoisomerases. As a postdoctoral researcher, she worked on DNA repair in S. cerevisiae and gene therapy at Stanford University and subsequently on meiotic recombination in S. pombe at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle. During this time, she wrote and published several original research articles and two book chapter reviews. For several years, she has worked as a scientific writer and editor and has achieved Board Certification as an Editor in the Life Sciences.
