Maralyn K., Ph.D.
Maralyn earned a Ph.D. in pharmacology and toxicology from the University of Louisville, an M.A. in pharmacology from Dartmouth Medical School, and a B.A. in chemistry from Wheaton College (Norton, MA). Her research experience includes assessing gastrointestinal ion transport, the pancreatic secretory capacity, neurotransmitters, and the photosensitivity of a steroidal progestin used in oral contraceptives. She has a working knowledge of several analytical techniques, including NMR, gas chromatography, UV and IR spectroscopy, and thin layer chromatography. She has published her research in peer-review journals (The Pharmacologist, American Journal of Physiology, and Pediatric Research) and book chapters (Neurobiological Mechanisms of Adaptation and Behavior, and Membrane Biophysics: Structure and Function in Epithelia).
The focus of her more than 30-year career in scientific writing and editing has been analyzing basic scientific and clinical trial research data and communicating these data in various scientific media. She has authored research and review articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters on a wide range of topics (e.g., drug design, chemistry, oncology, toxicology, gastroenterology, psychiatry, human reproduction).
She is a member of the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) and has completed AMWA training workshops in Building a New Drug Application, Grant Writing: NIH and Non-NIH Research Options and Strategies, Developing Clinical Research Materials into Articles, Scope of Medical Communications, Interventional and Observational Research Design, Outlining for Writers and Editors, English Usage and Abusage, and Punctuation for Clarity and Style.
Maralyn has also served as associate editor and copyeditor for The Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and has worked as a senior medical writer for a CRO, an assistant professor in the radiation/oncology department at the University of Rochester, a medical news writer, and a consultant for projects with government agencies including OSHA, ACC, ACS, WHO, and ICH.
