Scott W., PhD

Scott received a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Texas Tech University and a Ph.D. in bioengineering from Clemson University. He is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Thurston Arthritis Research Center at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. His primary research focus has been to elucidate, quantify, and predict the behavior of cells in response to physical stimuli. In particular, he has focused on cell signaling due to forces exerted on integrins, redox-mediated cell signaling, cellular biomechanics, and structural modeling of cell behavior. His current research concentrates on the influence of cysteine-mediated redox signaling mechanisms on mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways and actin dynamics in chondrocytes stimulated with fragments of fibronectin, as well as on mechanotransduction of chondrocytes via application of compressive, tensile, and hydrostatic forces across a5ß1 integrins.
