Briana D., Ph.D., E.L.S.
Briana earned her Ph.D. in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology from Indiana University, Bloomington. She studied how cells create polarity using S. cerevisiae as a model to define binding partners of Ras-homologous GTPases to discover how both the GTPases and their effector molecules influence actin cytoskeleton architecture and septin organization, particularly during bud emergence and pseudohyphal development. She went on to postdoctoral studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder. There, she developed a broader interest in the epigenetic control of mammalian gene expression, focused on the regulation of both skeletal and cardiac myosin heavy chain genes. As an Instructor at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, she returned to yeast to continue her epigenetic studies and helped uncover the mechanisms by which the histone chaperones Asf1 (anti-silencing function 1) and CAF-I (chromatin assembly factor I) control chromatin reassembly following DNA replication and repair. Throughout her scientific career, she has helped improve papers, posters, grant proposals, dissertations, and presentations for students, postdocs, and PIs on subjects ranging from crop transformation to miRNAs, RNaseP, breast cancer, non-small-cell lung cancer, prostate cancer, chromatin remodeling, transcription, histone modifications, translation initiation, replicative aging and DNA repair. She has also written for music blogs and edited the arts section of her college newspaper. In 2017, she became certified as an Editor in the Life Sciences by the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences, and for the last several years has focused on helping both native and non-native English-speakers communicate their science to diverse audiences. Her editing work has appeared in journals including Nature Communications, Nature Chemical Biology, Cell, Molecular Cell, Cell Reports, Genes and Development, Epigenetics Chromatin, and others.
