John N., Ph.D.
Beginning with reading a book on blood when he was nine years old, John has always been interested in answering the whys and hows of scientific inquiry. During his bachelor's degree in psychology at Towson State University, John worked as a summer intern studying behavioral pharmacology in Baltimore at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. His doctoral research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine involved studying a specific herpes viral protein that boosted the efficiency of viral replication. Akin to this, John's work also centered on the processes involved in cell transformation and oncogenesis. His post-doctoral research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, centered on signal transduction as it pertained to the proteins involved in interleukin-2 signaling in T cells. At the NIH, he mentored a HHMI high school–scholar as she learned more about the scientific method and guided her in her research project. John has published articles in biochemistry-, immunology-, and pharmacology-specific journals.
John entered scientific editing and publishing, working as an associate editor of Science's Signal Transduction Knowledge Environment (STKE, now known as Science Signaling) where he solicited, edited, and rewrote as necessary, perspectives, reviews, and protocols submitted by many well-respected, international investigators. He wrote for the journal as well, penning a perspective on T-cell activation and writing a multitude of article summaries. Subsequently, John was the long-time associate editor of Molecular Interventions, a PubMed-indexed journal published by The American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. He then moved to The American Society for Investigative Pathology where he was the scientific editor of The American Journal of Pathology and of the Journal of Molecular Diagnostics. John specializes in editing original research manuscripts, review manuscripts, short perspective pieces, and book chapters.
